1879 10,000 Reis King Luiz I NGC MS63+ PL

The 1879 Portugal Gold 10,000 Reis of King Luiz I, graded NGC MS63+ Prooflike, is a superb and conditionally rare large-format Portuguese gold coin from the final decades of the monarchy. Issued during the reign of Dom Luís I, this coin reflects both the elegance of 19th-century European royal portraiture and the stability of the Portuguese economy in the post-colonial era.

Obverse: Features the laureate head of King Luiz I facing left, surrounded by the Latin legend:
“LUDOVICUS I PORTUG ET ALGARB REX” — Luís I, King of Portugal and the Algarve, with the date 1879 below.

Reverse: Displays the ornate crowned coat of arms of Portugal, draped in royal mantle and topped by the royal crown, all within a beaded border. Below is the denomination:
“10000 REIS”, flanked by mintmarks.

Struck in .917 fine gold and weighing approximately 8.14 grams, this large gold coin reflects Portugal’s classical numismatic tradition and is a prestigious denomination. The Prooflike (PL) designation is especially rare, indicating mirror-like fields and frosted devices typical of early strikes from highly polished dies — not regularly achieved on business strikes.
