This substantial 6-ducat gold piece was minted in Salzburg upon the election of Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein as Prince-Archbishop. Coins like this were produced as donative issues, given to dignitaries and ecclesiastical elites to commemorate important ecclesiastical events. These high-denomination ceremonial strikes are exceptionally rare, especially in Mint State.
Obverse: features a detailed rendering of Saints Rupert and Virgil seated, with the Salzburg Cathedral in the background, emphasizing the religious and architectural heritage of the archbishopric. This imagery celebrates both the founding saints of Salzburg and the grandeur of the ecclesiastical capital.
Reverse: Displays the coat of arms of Archbishop Johann Ernst, surrounded by intricate baroque detailing, encapsulating both heraldic pride and the artistic sophistication of late 17th-century ecclesiastical mintage.
Graded NGC MS61, this coin is one of only three known examples of the date in Mint State, making it exceedingly rare. It features sharply struck details, vibrant fields with residual mint bloom, and an absence of serious flaws, aside from minor grade-aligning contact marks.
These characteristics indicate careful preservation since the time of its minting. This coin is a museum-grade specimen, showcasing both the technical excellence and ceremonial importance of Salzburg's gold coinage during the Habsburg era.
