1668 Austria, Salzburg Gold 5 Ducats NGC MS62

1668 Austria, Salzburg Gold 5 Ducats NGC MS62

This massive five-ducat gold issue was produced under Prince-Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph von Kuenburg, a powerful ecclesiastical figure in the Holy Roman Empire and head of the Archbishopric of Salzburg. These large gold coins served ceremonial and diplomatic purposes, struck in extremely limited numbers for high-level gifts or ecclesiastical display. Their artistic and historical importance rivals their intrinsic value.

Obverse: Depicts Saint Rupert and Saint Virgil, the patron saints of Salzburg, seated in majesty before a detailed rendering of Salzburg Cathedral. The saints are shown with traditional episcopal regalia — croziers and mitres — invoking the sacred authority of the Church and its architectural center.

Reverse: Presents the ornate coat of arms of Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph, prominently topped with a cardinal's galero (ecclesiastical hat) and flanked by delicate baroque ornamentation, all finely engraved to emphasize the prelate's status and heraldic heritage.

Graded NGC MS62, this coin is tied for finest known and exhibits superb strike quality, deeply defined relief, and well-preserved original surfaces. The mirrored brilliance of the fields and exceptional clarity in the architectural and heraldic elements demonstrate the skill of Salzburg’s minting artisans.

As a multiple ducat of extreme rarity, it stands as a pinnacle of baroque ecclesiastical coinage and a trophy piece for advanced collectors of European gold.
