Struck at the Dresden Mint during the reign of Johann Georg I, Elector of Saxony (1611–1656), this 1630 Gold 2 Ducats commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, a cornerstone of Lutheran doctrine presented to Emperor Charles V in 1530. Issued at the height of the Thirty Years’ War, this coin is not only a rare specimen of 17th-century German gold but also a bold Protestant declaration in numismatic form during a period of profound religious division in the Holy Roman Empire.
Obverse: Features a finely detailed right-facing armored bust of Johann Georg I, wearing a laurel wreath and holding a raised sword, symbolizing both authority and martial readiness. The inscription “CONFESSIO AVGVSTANA EXHIBITA 25 IVNII 1630” translates to "Augsburg Confession Presented June 25, 1630," affirming the coin’s historical and religious dedication.
Reverse: Displays the ornate Saxon electoral arms, crowned and surrounded by the Latin title: “IOHANN GEORG D G DUX SAX IUL CLIV & MONT”, signifying his dominion over Saxony, Jülich, Cleves, and Berg. The detailed heraldry and high-relief elements reflect the superior gold engraving standards of the Dresden mint.
Graded NGC AU53, this coin exhibits light, honest wear with original luster in protected areas. The strike is sharp with excellent relief across the bust and legend — a noteworthy quality for a gold ducat issue from the early 1600s. The 2 Ducat format, with an approximate weight of 6.86 grams in .986 fine gold, was a premium denomination used for ceremonial and presentation purposes rather than circulation.
