The Royal Mint, "In relation to the amount of production pieces we manufacture, die trial pieces are extremely rare. We typically produce between seven and 30 die trial pieces for each product, depending on the complexity and number of trials required. However, once the product is approved, most of the die trial pieces are destroyed and we catalogue only a handful of pieces – usually around three – for reference purposes."
The obverse features the fifth definitive portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Her Majesty is depicted facing left, adorned with the Royal Diamond Diadem crown. The surrounding inscription reads "ELIZABETH II • DEI • GRA • REGINA • FID • DEF", abbreviating the Latin for "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith
The reverse showcases the classic depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, a design by Benedetto Pistrucci that has graced British coinage since 1817. Saint George is portrayed on horseback, wielding a sword against the dragon beneath. The detail in the design is accentuated by the coin's deep prooflike finish, providing a mirror-like background that contrasts beautifully with the frosted relief. The year of issue, "2021", is inscribed below the scene.
