The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was introduced in 1907, replacing the Liberty Head design that had been in circulation since 1850. The coin was designed by famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, under the directive of President Theodore Roosevelt, who sought to create more artistic and beautiful coinage for the United States. The 1911 Proof Double Eagle is one of the highly sought-after coins in the Saint-Gaudens series due to its rarity and exceptional craftsmanship.

Obverse (Front)

  • The obverse features Lady Liberty striding forward, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.

  • Behind her is the rising sun, symbolizing progress and a new dawn for the nation.

  • The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the top, with 46 stars surrounding the rim (reflecting the number of states in the Union in 1911).

  • The date "1911" appears on the right side, just above the sun’s rays.

Reverse (Back)

  • The reverse showcases a majestic bald eagle soaring high above the sun’s rays, representing freedom and strength.

  • The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" appear at the top.

  • Unlike later issues (post-1908), the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is present beneath the eagle, reflecting a legislative change in 1908 to restore the religious inscription.
