1890 $5 Liberty Head NGC PF65+* Ultra Cameo

By 1890 America was beginning to see the end of the ‘Gilded Age’, ultimately leading to the Panic of 1893 which caused employment strikes across the country.

It was also the first known game of American football, when Ohio State defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 20-14.

The Gold Half Eagle of 1890 is a rare coin. With a business strike mintage of just 4,240 coins they are tough to acquire even for collectors who don’t discriminate between Proof and business strikings.

The Proof mintage with just 88 struck is in another league entirely. Only a fraction of that number remain in any condition today, and the current example grades an extraordinary Gem PF65 with both a Star AND a Plus designation!

A phenomenal addition to any world class collection.
