1888 US Liberty Head $5 "Trompeter" NGC PF66 Cameo

$81,250.00 USD

– SOLD

By 1888 America was well into its gilded age. Relative economic growth and innovation was showing itself from coast to coast as the nation was still swallowing its wounds from the Civil War just two decades prior. Like a phoenix rising above the ashes, the country came through. Today, it seems like proof gold is increasingly more difficult to locate and with every opportunity the great coins seem to be swallowed up for record numbers.

This exquisite PF66 Cameo example graded by NGC looks every bit the part of its given grade. With flashy, vivid contrast between the devices and fields it will provide even the pickiest collector with a phenomenal viewing opportunity!

In 1866, the Liberty Half Eagle was modified by adding the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above the eagle on the reverse. Apart from this, the motif with Liberty Head on the obverse and perched eagle on the reverse is the same used in earlier years. Mintage of the with-motto style was continuous at the Philadelphia Mint, with additional coins being made at San Francisco, Carson City, New Orleans and in 1906 and 1907, at the new Denver Mint. Combined with the earlier “no motto” style, the Liberty Half eagle is the only coin to be struck at all seven of the “traditional” U.S. mints.

Due to the high original mintages of many issues (particularly after 1880), obtaining a “with motto” half eagle should present no difficulties in any grade, up to and including MS-65. MS-66s are available, though scarcer. Above MS-66, the supply thins considerably.

The Philadelphia Mint only coined some 95 proof gold half eagles in 1888. Due to this tiny mintage and attrition over the years, this issue is quite hard to locate today. NGC has only graded a total of 17 examples.
