The 1888 $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagle, graded PF65 Ultra Cameo (UCAM) by NGC, is a rare and exceptional proof gold coin from the late 19th century. As a proof striking, this coin was never intended for circulation but was instead produced for collectors, dignitaries, and government archives.

Proof gold coins from this period were produced in extremely limited quantities due to low collector demand at the time. For the 1888 Liberty Head $10 Gold Eagle, only 97 proof coins were minted, making it an exceptionally scarce numismatic treasure today.

Obverse (Front) Design

  • Features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, adorned with a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY."

  • Her hair is styled in a bun, with cascading curls falling onto her neck.

  • Thirteen stars surround the design, symbolizing the original thirteen colonies of the United States.

  • The date "1888" is positioned at the bottom.

With the Ultra Cameo contrast, the frosted Liberty portrait sharply stands out against the coin’s deep mirror-like fields, creating a dramatic and visually stunning effect.

Reverse (Back) Design

  • Features a heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide in a majestic pose.

  • The eagle clutches an olive branch (a symbol of peace) in its right talon and three arrows (symbolizing military readiness) in its left talon.

  • A shield covers the eagle’s chest, representing the strength and protection of the nation.

  • Above the eagle, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed within a ribbon.

  • The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TEN DOLLARS" encircle the design.

The high-relief engraving and the proof striking enhance even the smallest details, from the individual feathers of the eagle to the intricate folds of the shield.
