The 1876/5 Colombia Gold 10 Pesos, Medellín Mint, graded NGC MS66, is an exceptional late 19th-century Republican issue and one of the highest-grade Colombian overdate gold coins known. Struck during the federalist era of the Estados Unidos de Colombia, this coin bears a rare 1876/5 overdate, making it both a condition and variety rarity, particularly in this elite state of preservation.
Obverse: Features the left-facing bust of Liberty, her hair flowing in neoclassical style beneath a small Phrygian cap, symbol of freedom and republicanism. The legend reads:
“ESTADOS UNIDOS DE COLOMBIA” — United States of Colombia, with the small date “1876” below, clearly showing the 6/5 overdate.
Reverse: Depicts the national arms of Colombia, a shield supported by a condor with outstretched wings, clutching a ribbon bearing the motto. Around the legend:
“G. 16.129 · DIEZ PESOS · LEI 0.900 · MEDELLIN” — denoting the coin's gold content (16.129 grams), denomination (10 Pesos), fineness (.900), and mint of origin.
Struck in .900 fine gold, this 10 Pesos coin weighs just over 16.12 grams, aligning with Latin American decimal gold standards. The Medellín Mint was one of the key issuers of Colombian republican gold coinage, but 1876/5 is an extremely elusive overdate, seldom encountered in any grade and virtually never in Gem Mint State.
Graded NGC MS66, this piece is among the finest known of its type and likely the highest certified for this specific overdate. It features full strike sharpness, intense original mint luster, and beautifully preserved golden surfaces with strong visual eye appeal.
