1870 Gold Medal of 5 Ducats PCGS SP62

1870 Gold Medal of 5 Ducats PCGS SP62

Issued by the Bavarian Agricultural Society, this substantial gold medal was created to recognize exceptional contributions to the advancement of Bavarian agriculture. Struck in high-relief with mirrored fields, it is a specimen of late 19th-century German medallic art, both functional and beautifully symbolic of progress through industry and cultivation.

Obverse: Displays a detailed image of a wheeled iron plow resting on soil, surrounded by the German inscription: “DER LANDWIRTSCHAFTLICHE VEREIN IN BAYERN” (The Agricultural Society of Bavaria). The engraving is crisply detailed, emphasizing technological development in agriculture.

Reverse: Features an elaborate botanical wreath composed of fruits, flowers, and grain, surrounding a five-line inscription: “DEM VERDIENSTE UM DIE VATERLÄNDISCHE LANDWIRTHSCHAFT” – “For merit in patriotic agriculture.”

Graded PCGS SP62, this medal was struck as a presentation piece, with brilliant prooflike surfaces and high-precision relief. The fields are deeply mirrored, contrasting beautifully with the frosted devices.

Its preservation reflects careful handling, and the design remains untouched by circulation. At the weight of 5 ducats, this example is both monumental and rare, issued in extremely small numbers and seldom encountered in any condition, let alone in certified specimen grade.
