1869 Gold 20 Pesos Medellin NGC MS62

$16,301.00 USD

The 1869 Colombia Gold 20 Pesos, Medellín Mint, graded NGC MS62, is a superb and highly desirable high-denomination Republican issue from the Estados Unidos de Colombia period. Struck in Medellín, one of the most prolific mints of 19th-century Colombia, this coin represents the pinnacle of national gold currency before the introduction of modern monetary reforms. With only one example known finer, this piece is an elite survivor in the numismatic census.

Obverse: Depicts the classical left-facing bust of Liberty, hair tied at the back with a ribbon, surrounded by the legend:
“ESTADOS UNIDOS DE COLOMBIA”, and the date “1869” below, flanked by rosettes and floral ornaments.

Reverse: Features a detailed condor with wings spread above a large national coat of arms, with ribbon-draped flags at each side. The legend reads:
“G. 33·868 VEINTE PESOS LEI 0·900 MEDELLIN” — indicating the coin's weight (33.868 grams), denomination (20 Pesos), gold fineness (.900), and mint of origin.

Struck in .900 fine gold, the coin weighs over 33.86 grams, making it one of the heaviest and most prestigious denominations in Colombian gold coinage. The 20 Pesos was likely used for major state transactions, reserves, and upper-tier private wealth preservation.

Graded NGC MS62, this example retains full mint luster, a sharp strike, and pleasing golden surfaces, with minimal contact marks for the size and type. It is the second finest certified example for this date and mint, emphasizing both its scarcity and quality.
