1860 G$1 NGC PF65+ CAMEO

$20,500.00 USD

Mint records indicate that 154 proof gold dollars were struck in 1860, but some were melted in January 1862. Recent estimates (by John Dannreuther) of the survival rate indicate that likely only 18 to 20 pieces are extant in all grades. This Gem Cameo is among the finer-known examples, showing a full strike and stark field-motif contrast. Warm golden color covers the surfaces, which are boldly contrasted between the frosted devices and deeply reflective fields. A couple of shallow planchet flakes in the right obverse field serve as useful pedigree identifiers.
