The 1853 Arrows and Rays Proof Seated Quarter is bar none one of the classic showstopper ultra rarities that demands inclusion in any of the greatest collections throughout the world.
With a mintage of just 5 coins it’s not rocket science to figure out that demand for this coin far outstrips the number of coins minted, and then there is of course the extraordinary condition of this example that must be further discussed.
It is undisputed that this date is the rarest and most desirable of the entire Seated Quarter series. In the hierarchy of 1853 Quarters, only a single example grades finer on its technical merits (PF67) but even that example lacks the exquisite Cameo contrast of the current offering.
There has always been an open secret that this coin is the greatest of them all. Why? The Cameo contrast of this example is completely unique amongst all 1853 Arrows and Rays Quarters. All other known examples merely reflect a “Prooflike” nature to them and while those examples are still designated as Proofs because they are struck from the same die, they are noticeably different.
It simply does not get any better than this.
This was an important time for our country. The discovery of gold in California led to an economic boom of sorts and expanded the nation dramatically westward.
The Coinage Act of 1853 adjusted the weight of silver coins to prevent them from being melted down for their bullion value, and what ensued was a numismatic treat for all the world to admire.
At this pricepoint you might expect that you’re merely just buying the best of a certain date but very rarely do we see a major ultra rarity with just 5 examples struck and only 1 Cameo example known (the present piece) at this kind of value.
Indeed, compared with other rarities in its class it befuddles the mind why there isn’t a 7 figure price attached to it.
Only 5 Minted! Classic Ultra Rarity.
The Undisputed and ONLY Cameo Proof Known!
A coin destined for one of the greatest collections of all time or that demands inclusion in the greatest Museums of the World.
