Great Britain Gold Half Guinea. The Finest Known Deep Prooflike! King George III.

A desirable gold full ‘Military’ Guinea of King George the Third, dated 1813. The obverse features the sixth type bust of the king, facing right. In this portrait, George III has short hair, unlike his long-haired earlier Guineas. The reverse – a unique design for this issue – shows a crowned garter, a divided shield of arms within representing England, Scotland and Ireland. The arms of the House of Hanover appear inescutcheon. This so called ‘Military Guinea’ was designed by Nathaniel Marchant and engraved by Lewis Pingo. 80,000 were struck to pay the Duke of Wellington’s army, then in the Pyrenees where the locals would accept only gold as payment. The date – 1813, the last year the Guinea was minted – appears between the legend and the central motif.
