1809NR JF Gold 8 Escudos NGC MS65

Issued at the height of Spain’s colonial dominion in the Americas, the 1809 Bogotá (NR-JF) Gold 8 Escudos stands as one of the finest examples of New World numismatic artistry and minting precision. Struck under Ferdinand VII, this piece encapsulates the waning years of Spanish rule in Latin America, just before the independence movements reshaped the continent.

Obverse: Features the crowned and armored bust of King Ferdinand VII facing right, adorned with a draped cuirass. The legend “FERDIN·VII·D·G· HISP·ET IND·R” surrounds the profile. The date "1809" is placed below, showing a clear and dramatic double repunching, a die variety highly sought after by specialists.

Reverse: Dominated by the Bourbon shield under a crown, surrounded by the Latin motto “IN UTROQ FELIX AUSPICE DEO,” with mintmark NR, assayer initials JF, and denomination “8 S” flanking the shield. The devices are sharply defined with excellent central detail and pleasing strike depth.

Graded NGC MS65, this example sits at the pinnacle of the certified census. Frosty luster blankets both sides with exceptional eye appeal, and while a faint wisp is noted in the fields, it scarcely diminishes the coin's brilliance. A gem-level specimen of one of the most iconic colonial gold types, and a showpiece in any advanced cabinet.
