Struck during the waning years of the Holy Roman Empire, this 1796 Ducat, graded NGC MS61, was issued under Emperor Francis II during a time of immense political upheaval. As Napoleonic forces swept through Europe, ducats like this served as both bullion currency and symbols of imperial continuity amid the fading order of the Habsburg monarchy.
Obverse: Features a full-length robed portrait of Emperor Francis II holding the orb and scepter, dressed in Roman-style ceremonial armor. The surrounding Latin legend affirms his imperial titles, rendered in high-relief detail that captures the regal posture and classical styling of Enlightenment-era monarchic imagery.
Reverse: Depicts the Madonna and Child radiating divine light, a distinctly Catholic motif affirming the emperor’s role as protector of the faith. The Latin inscription S. MARIA MATER DEI PATRONA HUNG. honors Mary as the patroness of Hungary—an enduring motif in Habsburg coinage.
In Mint State 61, this ducat displays full luster with well-preserved fields and sharp detail in the figurework. Minor contact marks are visible but do not detract from its impressive overall appearance. As a final-century example of traditional Habsburg gold coinage, this MS61 piece offers both historical gravity and investment-grade preservation for collectors of imperial or religious-themed European gold.
