Struck during the final years of France’s Ancien Régime, the 1788-A Louis d'Or, graded NGC MS63, offers a glimpse into the regal numismatics of Louis XVI’s reign—just before the revolutionary wave reshaped Europe.
Obverse: Depicts the laureate portrait of King Louis XVI facing left, adorned in classical style. The surrounding Latin legend reads LUD. XVI. D. G. FR. ET NAV. REX, affirming his divine right as king of France and Navarre. The design is sharply struck with clean facial contours and soft satin luster in the fields.
Reverse: Features the crowned arms of France and Navarre, side by side in elegantly rendered shields. The denomination and mintmark “A” (Paris Mint) sit at the base, encircled by the motto CHRS REGN. VINC. IMPER—short for Christus regnat, vincit, imperat (Christ reigns, conquers, commands).
The coin is vibrantly preserved with glowing golden surfaces and only the lightest touches of friction visible under magnification. As one of the final full Louis d'Or issues before the French Revolution, this Mint State example offers both numismatic prestige and historical weight.
