The 1787 Gold Ducat was issued during the reign of Emperor Joseph II of the Austrian Empire, who ruled from 1780 to 1790. The coin was part of the currency system that used the Gulden, and it was composed of high-purity gold.

The obverse features a laureate portrait of Emperor Joseph II facing right, with a mint mark below the bust and a legend around it. The inscription reads "IOS·II·D·G·R·I·S·A· GE·HV·BO·REX", which stands for Joseph II, by the grace of God, Roman Emperor, always August, Germany, Hungary, Bohemia King.

The reverse showcases a crowned double-headed imperial eagle with the Habsburg Lorraine arms, surrounded by a legend.
