1779-89 Venice Paolo Rainier 1z NGC MS62

Struck during the final years of the Venetian Republic, this 1779–1789 Zecchino (1 Z) of Doge Paolo Renier, graded NGC MS62, exemplifies the enduring elegance and consistency of Venice’s gold coinage tradition, even as the Republic neared its dissolution by Napoleon. The zecchino remained unchanged for centuries, a symbol of stability and purity in Mediterranean commerce.

Obverse: Depicts St. Mark standing at left presenting a cross-staff to the kneeling Doge Paolo Renier, with the legend referencing the Doge’s name and Venice’s patron saint. The scene reaffirms the spiritual legitimacy of Venetian leadership, unchanged since the 13th century.

Reverse: Shows Christ standing in a mandorla of stars, raising His hand in benediction and holding the Gospels. The Latin legend SIT T XPE DAT QTV REGIS ISTE DVCAT invokes divine blessing over the ducat’s circulation.

Graded MS62, this zecchino is particularly well-preserved for a late 18th-century hammered coin. Its luminous gold surfaces and sharp devices make it highly desirable, especially given its place at the twilight of Venetian independence. As both a beautiful artifact and a last echo of Renaissance-era stability, it holds strong appeal for collectors of world gold and pre-Napoleonic European coinage.
