1769 Gold Zecchino NGC MS64 PL

1769 Gold Zecchino NGC MS64 PL

Struck in the diminutive county of Belgiojoso in Lombardy, this 1769 Gold Zecchino under Antonio I of Barbiano is a rarely encountered trade issue and a testament to the regional prestige of Italian principalities. Graded NGC MS64 Prooflike, it is the finest certified example known to date.

Obverse: The portrait of Antonio I of Barbiano, Count of Belgiojoso, is displayed in crisp relief, facing right, clad in ornate armor and drapery. The surrounding legend ANTON•I•BARBIANI•BELGIOJOS•ET•SRI•P affirms his noble title within the Holy Roman Empire.

Reverse: The heraldic arms of Belgiojoso dominate the reverse, flanked by crowned and mantled supporters, with the legend COM•CUM•ETC•MARCH•GRUMELLA•1769 encircling the coat of arms. The engraving showcases impeccable detail, particularly within the lattice shield and ribboned order chain.

Reflective fields and needle-sharp strike details lend this zecchino an elegance usually reserved for large-mintage state coinage. Its pristine surfaces and mirrorlike luster make it a visually striking numismatic rarity—unique at this grade and an exceptional survivor from an obscure yet fascinating Lombardic jurisdiction.
