The 1761 14 Gulden "Golden Rider" is a significant historical artifact from the Dutch Republic era. Struck for the Province of Groningen & Ommelanden, this issue is uniquely notable as a one-year-only mintage from this province. The coin was minted under contract at the Harderwijk mint in Gelderland rather than at Groningen's own facilities, adding to its distinctive history.
The obverse depicts an armored knight (rider) on horseback above the crowned provincial arms of Groningen & Ommelanden. The Latin legend "MO AUR PRO CONFŒD • BELG • GRON • & • OML" translates to "Golden Coin of the United Provinces of Belgic (Netherlands), Groningen and Ommelanden."
The reverse features the crowned arms of the Generality (Netherlands) flanking the denomination ("14 GL") and date, with the motto "CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCUNT" ("Unity makes strength"), the national motto of the Dutch Republic.
This issue stands out because Groningen rarely issued gold coins in the 1700s, only producing duits, stuivers, 7 Gulden, and this 14 Gulden. The Golden Rider design was produced by all seven provinces of the Dutch Republic, but each with its own provincial arms, making this Groningen issue particularly desirable to collectors seeking provincial representation
The rarity of high-grade examples is clear – even near-Uncirculated survivors of this issue are scarce in today's market. The coin's combination of choice AU grade and full luster places it Among The Top Surviving Examples Available To Collectors.
