1760 Zeeland Gold 14 Gulden NGC MS61

$5,005.00 USD

The 1760 Zeeland 14 Gulden gold ducat (KM#97, Fr-313, Delm-889) was struck at the Middelburg mint of the Dutch province of Zeeland during the time of the Dutch Republic. This impressive gold coin represents an important era in Dutch numismatic history.

Obverse : Features the distinctive "Golden Rider" – an armored knight brandishing a sword on a prancing horse positioned above Zeeland's crowned arms. The Latin legend "MO·AUR·PRO·CONFŒD·BELG·ZELAND·" translates to "Gold coin of the provinces of the confederated Belgium – Zeeland," identifying the issuing province.

Reverse: Displays the crowned Dutch lion's shield flanked by the date "1760" above, the value "14 GL" to the left, and surrounded by the motto "CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCUNT" ("Unity makes small things grow") around the edge.

These riders were common on 7 and 14 Guilder issues produced between 1760-1764 in Zeeland (KM#96, KM#97) and reflect Zeeland's important role as a seafaring trade province. Coins like this facilitated and financed East and West Indies commerce during the Dutch Republic, making them both historically significant and economically important artifacts.

The knight (Golden Rider) on horseback serves as the province's emblem, with similar designs appearing on Zeeland's 7 Gulden and 14 Gulden issues of this era. The inscriptions and motifs were standard for Zeeland ducats, with the knight motif also used on issues from 1760-1764.

By definition, MS61 coins exceed AU (About Uncirculated) grades but lack the full brilliance of higher Mint States such as MS63-MS65. Some bag marks, scuffs, or areas of diminished luster are acceptable at this grade level, but the coin should still present as an uncirculated specimen with no actual wear from circulation.
