Struck during a short-lived emission period (1749–1751 and 1760–1763), the 14 Gulden coin from the province of Zeeland represents one of the most prestigious gold issues of the Dutch Republic. Often referred to as a “Golden Rider”, it served as high-denomination trade currency during the late Republic era.
Obverse: Features an armored knight on horseback charging right, positioned above the crowned provincial arms. The Latin legend around reads: “MO AUR PRO CONFOED BELG ZEL” (Gold coin of the province of Zeeland of the United Provinces).
Reverse: Displays the crowned Dutch lion shield dividing the denomination, date, and value, with the motto “CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCUNT” (“Unity makes strength”) above.
Graded NGC MS61, this example is among the highest-graded survivors, showing full mint luster and crisp details, though typical contact marks consistent with the grade are present. The 1760–1763 dates are notably rarer than the earlier 1750s emissions, and most known survivors are in VF to AU. Certified Mint State pieces are exceedingly rare, making this a top-condition rarity from Zeeland.
