1724 Utrecht "Akerendam Shipwreck" Ducat NGC MS64

$5,630.00 USD

The Dutch gold ducat was a renowned trade coin first introduced in the 16th century, struck to a standard of about 3.5 grams of 98.6% fine gold. The design had become iconic and remained virtually unchanged for centuries. On the obverse is a knight in armor holding a bundle of arrows in one hand and a sword in the other. The bundle typically represents the seven provinces of the United Netherlands (the Dutch Republic) united in strength.

Obverse: Depicts a knight in armor holding a bundle of arrows and a sword, encircled by the Latin motto “CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT” – “Unity makes strength.”

Reverse: Displays a tablet inscribed “MO. ORD. PROVIN. FOEDER. BELG. AD LEG. IMP.”, abbreviating “Coin of the Federation of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, struck according to the law of the Empire.”

Graded NGC MS64, this piece is a high-end Mint State specimen, exhibiting strong original luster, sharp design detail, and relatively few contact marks or abrasions. While many Akerendam coins survive in MS60–62, the MS64 grade reflects significant visual superiority, often with brighter fields and crisper knight detail
