Struck during the early reign of King Louis XV (a child king under a Regency), the 1718 Louis d'Or is part of a short-lived type known as the “Louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit” (Louis d'or with the Holy Spirit's cross). This distinctive type was issued only in 1718–1719, replacing the earlier heavier Louis d'Or de Noailles, and is instantly recognizable for its Maltese cross reverse design.
Obverse: Depicts a youthful, laureate portrait of Louis XV facing left, with the legend: “LUD. XV D. G. FR. ET NAV. REX” (Louis XV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre), and the date “1718” below the bust.
Reverse: Displays four crowned shields arranged in a cruciform pattern, representing the arms of France and Navarre, with fleur-de-lis in each quadrant. At the center is the mintmark “A” (for Paris), surrounded by the motto: “CHRISTVS REGNAT VINCIT IMPERAT” (Christ reigns, conquers, commands).
Graded PCGS MS63, this coin exhibits strong mint luster, clear legends, and sharp design detail, with only minor ticks, making it a Choice Uncirculated example. Most 1718-A coins have not survived in top condition, with many lost, melted, or heavily circulated. PCGS has recorded only one coin graded MS63, with merely three finer at MS64 and none higher, placing this example at the very top tier of known survivors from the Paris Mint.
