Struck under Doge Alvise Contarini during the late 17th century, this 1676–1684 Venice Zecchino (1 Z), graded NGC MS64, is a superb example of the long-standing Venetian gold coinage tradition. The zecchino, famous for its purity and artistic consistency, was a vital trade coin in Mediterranean commerce and a symbol of the Venetian Republic's political-religious ideology.
Obverse: Shows St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, standing at left presenting a long banner to the kneeling Doge Alvise Contarini at right. The figures are richly draped and framed by the Latin legend S M VENET ALOYS CONTAR DVX, affirming both divine blessing and civic authority.
Reverse: Features Christ standing within a radiant almond-shaped mandorla, holding the Gospels in one hand and raising the other in benediction. The surrounding legend SIT T XPE DAT QTV REGIS ISTE DVCAT (“Let this ducat be blessed, O Christ, you who reign”) encapsulates the sacred character of the coin.
Graded MS64, this example is exceptionally well-struck and preserved, with brilliant golden luster and sharply defined features. The surfaces are remarkably clean for a hammered gold issue, placing this zecchino near the top of the condition census. Its combination of historical resonance, religious artistry, and elite preservation makes it a standout for collectors of Italian or pre-modern trade gold.
