Struck early in the reign of Louis XIV, the 1672-A Louis d'Or, graded NGC AU58, is a classic representation of France’s golden coinage as it entered its era of centralized monarchy and financial modernization.
Obverse: Features a laureate bust of King Louis XIV facing right, wearing a draped robe. His regal expression and long curled hair reflect the grandiose self-image of the "Sun King." The Latin legend around the edge reads LVD·XIIII·D·G·FR·ET·NAV·REX, declaring him King of France and Navarre by the grace of God.
Reverse: Showcases four crowned “L” monograms arranged in a cruciform pattern, with fleur-de-lis filling the angles and a central oval medallion. The legend CHRS·REGN·VINC·IMP emphasizes the divine right of Christ as ruler and conqueror, aligning with Louis XIV’s political theology.
This near-Mint State specimen displays exceptional strike sharpness and retains strong luster across both sides. Light wear appears only on the high points, preserving the intricate artistry. A handsome and desirable coin from the Paris Mint, it reflects the grandeur and ambition of one of France’s most iconic rulers.
