Struck during Oliver Cromwell’s brief tenure as Lord Protector, this 1658/7 overdate Silver Crown represents one of the most iconic numismatic relics of the English Interregnum. Cromwell’s portrait, modeled in a classical Roman style, reflects the deliberate adoption of imperial symbolism as the Commonwealth transitioned from monarchy to a protectorate. The reverse features a Latin motto that translates to "Peace is sought through war," capturing the militaristic and political ideology of Cromwell’s government.
Obverse: Laureate and draped bust of Oliver Cromwell left, legend OLIVAR. D.G.R.P. ANG. SCO. HIB &c PRO. Struck with bold classical styling.
Reverse: Crowned quartered shield of the Protectorate with date 1658 above, encircled by the motto PAX QVÆRITVR BELLO. Edge inscribed *.HAS. NISI. PERITVRVS. MIHI. ADIMAT. NEMO.
Graded NGC MS61, this overdate variety (8 over 7) exhibits smooth silver surfaces with delicate cabinet tone and sharply preserved central detail. A visually distinguished specimen from the rare Crown series of Cromwellian England.
