Struck during England’s brief Commonwealth period, the 1656 Gold Broad featuring Oliver Cromwell is one of the most iconic coins in British numismatics. Minted using advanced techniques by Pierre Blondeau, this coin reflects the precision and artistry of the Protectorate era.
The obverse displays a left-facing laureate bust of Oliver Cromwell, styled in the manner of a Roman Emperor. The legend reads: OLIVAR D G R P ANG SCO ET HIB & PRO ("Oliver, by the Grace of God, Protector of the Republic of England, Scotland and Ireland.")
The reverse features Cromwell’s crowned shield of arms within a laurel wreath. The Latin legend around reads:
PAX QUAERITUR BELLO ("Peace is sought through war.") Date 1656 appears above the crown.
