1653B 1 Louis D'Or Louis XIV NGC MS61

1653B 1 Louis D'Or Louis XIV NGC MS61

Issued during the early personal reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King,” this 1653-B Louis d’Or from the Rouen Mint, graded NGC MS61, exemplifies the transitional period in French monetary reform and absolutist symbolism. Louis XIV’s gold coinage set the stage for a centralized and standardized royal image across France's expanding economy.

Obverse: Features a laureate bust of the youthful Louis XIV facing right, styled in the Roman imperial tradition. The Latin legend reads LVD XIIII D G – FR ET NAV REX ("Louis XIV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre"), affirming his divine right to rule.

Reverse: Displays a crowned cruciform arrangement of four “L”s surrounding a central “B” mintmark, with fleurs-de-lis filling the quarters. This design radiates symmetry and power, underscoring France’s monarchical strength and religious identity.

Graded MS61, this example offers above-average preservation for a hammered Louis d’Or. The surfaces retain considerable original luster, and the devices are sharply rendered with only light contact visible in the fields. As an early Louis XIV issue predating the full emergence of milled coinage, it holds both historical and numismatic appeal, especially for collectors of Bourbon France or gold coinage of the Ancien Régime.
