The Louis d'Or coins were a symbol of the wealth and power of the French monarchy. They were used extensively in trade and were highly valued across Europe. The 1651/44 Louis d'Or is particularly notable because it represents the early years of Louis XIV's reign, a time when France was becoming a dominant European power.
The obverse of the coin features a laureate bust of Louis XIV facing right. The inscription around the bust reads "LVD XIII D G FR ET NAV REX," which translates to "Louis XIII, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre".
The reverse side displays a cross formed by four pairs of interlocked "L"s, with a crown above each pair. The legend around the cross reads "CHRS REGN VINC IMP," meaning "Christ reigns, conquers, and commands".
