Struck between 1641 and 1643 at the Tower Mint in London, this gold Unite was issued during the reign of King Charles I. The Unite, valued at twenty shillings, was part of the hammered coinage system and represents one of the higher denominations of the period. This coin was minted during a tumultuous time leading up to the English Civil War, reflecting the monarchy's efforts to assert authority and maintain financial stability.
Obverse: Features a crowned and armored bust of King Charles I facing left, adorned with a lace collar. The legend reads: “CAROLVS D G MAG BRI FR ET HI REX” (Charles, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland). The mint mark, a triangle-in-circle, is present, indicating its issuance from the Tower Mint during this specific period.
Reverse: Displays a square-topped shield bearing the royal arms, quartered by a cross. The surrounding legend states: “CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO” (I reign under the auspice of Christ), underscoring the divine right of kings, a central theme in Charles I's reign.
Condition and Rarity:
Graded NGC MS62, this coin is exceptionally well-preserved for a hammered gold issue of the early 17th century. The strike is sharp, and the surfaces exhibit a pleasing luster, with minimal signs of handling. Gold Unites from this period, especially in such high grades, are rare and highly sought after by collectors of British numismatics.
