ITALY GOLD SCUDO D'ORO, GENOA. THE FINEST KNOWN!

The Scudo d’Oro (Gold Shield) was a popular gold coin issued in various Italian states during the Renaissance. In 1543, Italy was not a unified nation but a collection of independent city-states, duchies, and kingdoms, such as Venice, Florence, the Papal States, and Milan.

The obverse  displays the reigning monarch or ruler of the issuing state, depicted in a detailed, lifelike style influenced by Renaissance artistry. For example, rulers like Cosimo I de’ Medici of Florence or Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire might appear, depending on the minting city or state.

The reverse  features a coat of arms or a heraldic shield of the issuing state or family. This was a common motif on Scudi d’Oro and highlighted the political authority of the issuer.
