1515-1547 ECU'OR Francois I NGC AU58

1515-1547 ECU'OR Francois I NGC AU58

Issued during the flourishing French Renaissance, the 1515–1547 Écu d'Or of King François I, graded NGC AU58, exemplifies the elegant transformation of French gold coinage under one of the most iconic Valois monarchs. François I's reign marked a golden age of art, learning, and architectural patronage—and his coinage reflects this sophisticated aesthetic shift.

Obverse: Displays a quartered shield bearing the royal arms of France, the fleur-de-lis and lion passant arranged in alternating quadrants. The surrounding Latin legend proclaims the king’s sovereignty and divine right, inscribed within a bead-and-line border.

Reverse: Features an ornate floral cross fleury, adorned with stylized fleurs-de-lis at each end and a central rosette or star motif. This intricately rendered cross sits within a tressure of arcs and floral elements, typical of early 16th-century French gold pieces.

This example is remarkably well-preserved, with smooth fields and strong device detail, particularly for a hammered gold issue. A faint golden patina adds charm, while the nearly full strike and sharp central devices elevate this piece to an elite status among survivors. An exceptional acquisition for collectors focused on early French regal coinage.
