1505-09 King Henry VII Gold Angel PCGS MS62

1505-09 King Henry VII Gold Angel PCGS MS62

The Henry VII gold Angel of 1505-1509 dates to the late medieval Tudor period and represents an important historical artifact from England's first Tudor monarch.

Key features include:

  • First introduced in 1465 under Edward IV and continued by successive monarchs
  • Struck during Henry VII's reign (1485-1509), which ushered in stability after the Wars of the Roses
  • Made of nearly pure gold, weighing approximately 5.1 grams
  • Hand-struck (hammered) at the Tower of London mint

Obverse: Features Archangel Michael standing over and piercing a dragon with a cross-topped spear — a striking image of divine triumph over evil. The obverse bears the legend: “HENRIC VII DI GRA REX ANG L FR” (Henry VII, by the Grace of God, King of England and France).

Reverse: Depicts a ship at sea bearing a quartered shield of England and France, with a cross mast, a Tudor rose, and an “H” for Henry. The surrounding Latin motto reads: “PER CRUCE TVA SALVA NOS XPC REDE” (By Thy Cross save us, Christ Redeemer), emphasizing religious faith and the monarchy’s divine sanction.

This means our coin sits at the very top tier of known examples. In effect, Mint State Tudor gold is almost unheard of, so any MS62 is a trophy coin. The combination of historical importance, low survival, and top-tier condition makes this piece exceptional and far more desirable than typical lower-grade examples.
