1504-1505 Henry VII Gold Angel NGC AU55

1504-1505 Henry VII Gold Angel NGC AU55

Produced during the final years of Henry VII’s reign, this Gold Angel represents one of the most recognizable and symbolic coins of the Tudor era. This specific issue bears the Cross-Crosslet mintmark, identifying it as minted at the Tower of London between 1504 and 1505. The Angel series served both a monetary and spiritual function, famously associated with the royal touch ritual for healing scrofula (“the King’s Evil”).

Obverse: Features the nimbate figure of St. Michael the Archangel, fully airborne and spearing a dragon (Satan) with a cross-tipped staff. The surrounding legend reads: (cross-crosslet) hЄnRIC: DI' x GRΛ' x RЄX x ΛnGLIЄ' x Z x FRΛ' +, which translates to “Henry, by the Grace of God, King of England and France,” with saltire stops between words.

Reverse: Displays a Tudor shield over a ship at sea, flanked by the rosette-initial "h" and Tudor rose. The inscription: (cross-crosslet) PЄR • CRVCЄ' • TVΛ' • SΛLVΛ • nOS • XPЄ' • RЄD' – “By Thy cross save us, Christ Redeemer” – encircles the design.

Graded NGC AU55, this coin is a well-preserved example with an attractive, broad flan and only moderate areas of weakness, which are typical of late medieval hammered gold. Its clean surfaces and centered design contribute to its eye appeal, making it a desirable representation of early Tudor religious and political iconography in gold.
