1474-1504 Gold 2 Excellente PCGS AU58

1474-1504 Gold 2 Excellente PCGS AU58

Struck under the joint reign of King Ferdinand V and Queen Isabella I, the 2 Excelentes—or Double Excelente—symbolized Spain’s growing unity and global ambitions during the late 15th century. These high-value gold coins reflected both the wealth of the monarchy and its expanding influence across Europe and the New World.

Obverse: Displays facing crowned busts of Ferdinand and Isabella, flanked by the Seville Mint mark. The legend reads: FERDINANDVS ET ELISABET DEI GRATIA ("Ferdinand and Isabella, by the grace of God").

Reverse: Features the royal coat of arms atop a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings. The surrounding motto reads: SVB VMBRA ALARVM TVARVM PROTEGE NOS DOMINE ("Under the shadow of Your wings, protect us, O Lord").

A superb example of late medieval Spanish coinage, this 2 Excelentes graded PCGS AU58 shows well-defined detail on both portraits and arms, with golden surfaces that retain impressive original brilliance. A scarce and iconic piece from the reign that launched Spain’s rise as a global empire.
