1474-1504 Gold 2 Excellente PCGS AU55

Struck during the joint reign of King Ferdinand V and Queen Isabella I, the 2 Excelentes (also known as the Double Excelente) was a significant gold coin of late 15th-century Spain. Minted primarily in Seville, this coin symbolizes the unification of Spain under the Catholic Monarchs and their expansive influence during the Age of Exploration. The issuance of such high-denomination gold coins reflected the burgeoning wealth and global ambitions of Spain during this transformative period.

Obverse: Features facing crowned busts of Ferdinand and Isabella, each adorned in regal attire, symbolizing their joint sovereignty. Between the busts, the mintmark "S" denotes the Seville Mint. The surrounding Latin legend reads: FERDINANDVS ET ELISABET DEI GRATIA, translating to "Ferdinand and Isabella, by the grace of God."

Reverse: Displays the royal coat of arms of the united Spanish kingdoms, surmounted by a crown and set upon a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, representing the strength and unity of their rule. The legend encircling the design reads: SVB VMBRA ALARVM TVARVM PROTEGE NOS DOMINE, meaning "Under the shadow of Your wings, protect us, O Lord."

A superb example of Renaissance-era Spanish coinage, this 2 Excelentes graded PCGS AU55 showcases remarkable preservation and intricate detail. The sharpness of the royal portraits and the clarity of the heraldic imagery are particularly noteworthy. The coin's lustrous surfaces and historical significance render it a prized acquisition for collectors of European numismatics.
