Issued during the first reign of King Edward IV amidst the turmoil of the Wars of the Roses, the Gold Ryal (also known as the Rose Noble) represents a high-denomination coinage designed to project royal strength and legitimacy. This type was struck at the Tower Mint and is one of the most visually striking medieval English gold issues, minted only for a short period.
Obverse: Depicts the crowned and armored figure of Edward IV standing aboard a large ship, holding a sword in his right hand and a shield in his left. A rose emblem is prominently displayed on the ship’s hull, reinforcing the Yorkist dynastic badge.
Reverse: Shows a radiant rose within a sunburst at the center of a floriated cross, with alternating lions and crowns in the angles. All are enclosed within a polylobe with large trefoils in the spandrels, enhancing the design's symmetry and visual depth.
Graded NGC AU55, this coin features strong detail and attractive surfaces, with only light circulation friction. The short-lived production window and intricate design make it one of the more elusive and desirable issues of Edward’s gold coinage. Its preservation and artistry place this example among the finest known, as most surviving specimens are found in much lower grades or exhibit problems from extensive use and mounting.
