1422-61 ECU'OR Charles VII NGC MS63

1422-61 ECU'OR Charles VII NGC MS63

Struck during the later stages of the Hundred Years’ War, the 1422–1461 Écu d'Or of Charles VII, graded NGC MS63, reflects France's recovery under a monarch who would ultimately reclaim territory from the English and restore internal stability.

Obverse: Features a crowned shield bearing the royal arms of France—three prominent fleurs-de-lis—encircled by a Latin legend asserting Charles VII's legitimacy as ruler. The flan is well-proportioned and unusually round for a hammered issue, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

Reverse: Depicts a cross fleury with alternating crowned fleurs-de-lis and leopard heads in the quadrants. A central rosette anchors the design. The craftsmanship is refined, with delicate detail visible on the symbolic emblems, indicating a high-quality strike and minimal die wear.

This Mint State specimen boasts full legends and clean, satiny fields that suggest limited handling and strong preservation. The luster, strike precision, and historic resonance make this a standout example of a transitional coinage that bridges medieval tradition with emerging Renaissance influence.
