Struck during the reign of Charles VII, this 1422–1461 Écu d’or à la couronne, graded NGC MS62, represents a high point in French medieval coinage and national recovery. Following the instability of the English occupation and internal discord, Charles VII reasserted control over France with the help of major reforms and the symbolic leadership of Joan of Arc. His coinage marked a return to stability, projecting renewed authority and trust in the crown’s monetary system.
Obverse: Features a crowned royal shield of France with three fleurs-de-lis, enclosed by a trefoil-tipped tressure and a surrounding Latin legend declaring Charles as rightful king. The clear crown and well-defined fleurs-de-lis reflect the confidence of a restored monarchy.
Reverse: Displays a floriated cross with fleurs-de-lis in each quadrant, enclosed within a quatrefoil frame. This combination of heraldic and religious iconography symbolizes the divine right of kings and the sanctity of royal power.
Graded MS62, this coin is a condition rarity for the type, showing sharp details with minimal handling and a strong, centered strike. The flan is broad and even, with near-complete legends and pronounced design elements—particularly in the crown and cross. As one of the finest surviving examples of Charles VII’s gold issues, it stands out as both a historic relic and an elite acquisition for collectors of French royal or late medieval coinage.
