1422-1461 Gold Royal D'OR NGC AU55

1422-1461 Gold Royal D'OR NGC AU55

Struck under King Charles VII of France (1422–1461), the Royal d'Or was introduced during the later stages of the Hundred Years' War. It served as a prestigious gold coin, symbolizing the renewed strength of the French monarchy following pivotal victories like the Siege of Orléans and the coronation at Reims. The Royal d'Or reflects the monarchy’s assertion of divine authority and political legitimacy during a critical phase of French national revival.

Obverse: Features Charles VII enthroned, holding a scepter and an orb, crowned and robed in regal attire. The figure is seated beneath a Gothic canopy richly decorated with arches and pinnacles, symbolizing both secular and divine rulership. The surrounding legend proclaims: "KAROLVS DEI GRACIA FRANCORV REX" ("Charles, by the grace of God, King of the French").

Reverse: Displays a floriated cross within a quatrefoil, adorned with fleurs-de-lis at the angles. At the center is a small rosette. The surrounding Latin legend reads: "XPC VINCIT XPC REGNAT XPC IMPERAT", meaning "Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands," emphasizing the divine legitimacy of the king’s rule.

A superb medieval gold issue, this Royal d'Or graded NGC AU55 displays remarkably sharp detail for a hammered coin of its era. The enthroned portrait of Charles VII and the floriated cross reverse remain fully intact, framed by brilliant surfaces and only minimal wear. An important artifact from the reign that saw France emerge triumphant from decades of conflict, offering exceptional appeal for collectors of royal and medieval gold coinage.
