1406-1454 Gold Double Banda PCGS MS62

1406-1454 Gold Double Banda PCGS MS62

The Double Banda, or Dobla de la Banda, was struck under King Juan II of Castile and León during a time of political complexity and dynastic consolidation. The coin’s name comes from the distinctive diagonal "banda" (band) that features prominently in the design, symbolizing royal authority and the chivalric traditions of medieval Spain. These gold coins served as instruments of prestige and economic strength during a critical era for the Castilian monarchy.

Obverse:
Depicts a shield bearing the diagonal "banda" (band) across the field, representing the Order of the Band — a prestigious knightly order tied to Castilian royal power. The design is framed by a legend naming Juan II as king by divine right: “+ IOHANNES DEI GRACIA REX CASTELLE LEGIONIS” (Juan, by the grace of God, King of Castile and León).

Reverse:
Features a quartered shield showing the traditional arms of Castile (castle) and León (lion), highlighting the union of these two historic realms under Juan II. The reverse legend continues the royal titulature, emphasizing his dominion.

An exceptional survivor of medieval Spain, this Gold Double Banda graded PCGS MS62 displays sharp definition, rich golden luster, and remarkably well-preserved surfaces for a hammered gold issue. The heraldic devices remain crisp, offering a vivid connection to the martial and regal traditions of 15th-century Castile. Among the finest preserved examples known of this important and rare type.
