The obverse of the Écu d'Or features Shield with the Arms of France: The central motif is the royal shield, adorned with the fleurs-de-lis, a symbol of French royalty and heraldry. Surrounding the shield is an inscription, often reading "KAROLVS FRANCORVM REX" ("Charles, King of the Franks").

The reverse design shows a Cross with Fleurs-de-lis and Crowns this symbolism emphasized the unity of the monarchy and the church, a key aspect of medieval French rulership.
