Issued during the reign of France’s enigmatic "Mad King," the 1380–1422 Écu d'Or of Charles VI, graded NGC MS63, represents a stunning survival of late medieval gold coinage. These écu pieces played a vital role in the monetary structure of Valois France amid both internal instability and the Hundred Years’ War.
Obverse: Displays the crowned royal arms of France, a shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis beneath an ornate open crown. The surrounding Latin legend proclaims Charles VI's authority as King of France. The fields are notably clean for the era, with a near-flawless central strike.
Reverse: Features a cross fleury within a quadrilobe, adorned at each cusp with additional fleurs-de-lis. A rosette resides at the center of the cross, reinforcing the visual symmetry and sacred tone. The fine detail and symmetry of the floriated forms are unusually well preserved, especially for a hammered gold issue.
This MS63 example showcases rich golden tone and a nearly round, full flan—attributes rare for this hammered type. Well centered with strong legends, this coin offers exceptional visual harmony and historic importance from a turbulent royal era.
