Struck during the reign of Charles VI of France, this 1380–1422 Écu d’or à la couronne, graded NGC MS61, is a testament to the enduring authority of the Valois monarchy despite political upheaval and Charles's frequent incapacitating bouts of mental illness. Coinage from this period continued the strong heraldic traditions of earlier French kings and projected continuity in royal legitimacy.
Obverse: Displays a crowned royal shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis, enclosed by a trefoil-tipped tressure and surrounded by the legend naming Charles as king. The bold design affirms the monarchy’s claim to divine and dynastic sovereignty amidst internal factionalism and English encroachment.
Reverse: Features a floriated long cross with fleurs-de-lis in each quadrant, set within a quatrefoil frame. This iconography, rich in Christian symbolism, reinforces the coin’s sacred connotations and its function as a trusted instrument of royal finance.
Graded NGC MS61, this example is remarkably well-preserved for a hammered issue, with sharp central details, minimal doubling, and strong golden luster. Its clean surfaces and solid strike mark it as a superior specimen, representing one of the best-preserved écu d’or examples from the turbulent reign of Charles VI—a standout for collectors of late medieval French coinage.
