$1,200.00 USD

The Mexican Gold Half Escudo was a gold coin minted during the early years of the Mexican Republic, specifically between 1825 and 1870. This period followed Mexico's independence from Spain, marking a time of nation-building and economic development. The Half Escudo coin reflects the nascent republic's efforts to establish its own monetary system and national identity.

The obverse of the Half Escudo features the national emblem of Mexico: an eagle facing right, perched on a cactus in the middle of a lake, with a snake held in its beak. This imagery is surrounded by laurel and oak branches tied at the bottom, symbolizing victory and strength. Encircling the design is the inscription "REPUBLICA MEXICANA," translating to "Mexican Republic."

The reverse depicts a hand writing on the book of law, with a Liberty cap atop the pen, symbolizing the nation's commitment to justice and freedom. Above this scene is the legend "*LIBERTAD EN LA LEY," meaning "Liberty in the Law." Below, the coin's denomination "1/2 E," mint mark (e.g., "Mo" for Mexico City), year of minting, assayer's initials, and gold fineness in karats (21K) are inscribed.
