The 1755 France Gold Louis d'Ors, Shipwreck Recovered and graded NGC AU55, AU58, and MS61, are outstanding survivors of mid-18th-century French maritime commerce and numismatic history. Minted during the reign of King Louis XV, these coins were produced at the Paris Mint (or other royal mints) using advanced screw-press technology and intended primarily for large-value circulation and overseas shipment — often aboard vessels engaged in transatlantic or colonial trade.
Obverse: Features a right-facing bust of Louis XV with classical Roman styling, typically draped and cuirassed, surrounded by the legend:
“LUD XV D G FR ET NAV REX” — Louis XV, by the grace of God, King of France and Navarre.
Reverse: Displays the crowned cruciform shield arms of France and Navarre, formed by four quartered shields with fleurs-de-lis, and the motto:
“CHRS REGN VINC IMP” — Christ reigns, conquers, commands.
These examples are of particular significance due to their shipwreck provenance — likely recovered from one of several known 18th-century French maritime disasters where gold coins were lost en route to colonies or trade outposts. Their underwater preservation and subsequent recovery have left the coins with well-protected details and, remarkably, prooflike reflectivity in some specimens — an extremely rare phenomenon for circulated French gold of the era.
A true Mint State survivor with original luster and sharp design definition, enhanced by the rarity of uncirculated examples with shipwreck provenance.
