1749/8 Gold Louis D'Or NGC AU58

$16,301.00 USD

This overdated 1749/8 Louis d'Or, struck at the Amiens Mint (mintmark “X”), is a scarce and historically significant issue from the reign of King Louis XV (1715–1774). The overdate feature, where the numeral “9” is punched over an “8,” indicates the reuse of dies from the previous year, a practice employed to economize die production. Such overdates are relatively rare and highly sought after by collectors, especially when combined with the mint's limited output.

Obverse: Features the left-facing bust of Louis XV adorned with a laurel wreath, symbolizing victory and sovereignty. The legend reads: “LUD. XV D. G. FR. ET NAV. REX” (Louis XV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre), encircling the portrait.

Reverse: Displays two oval shields beneath a royal crown: the left shield bears the three fleurs-de-lis of France, and the right represents the arms of Navarre. The inscription “CHRS. REGN. VINC. IMPER.” (Christ reigns, conquers, commands) surrounds the shields, emphasizing the divine right of kings. The overdate “1749/8” is prominently positioned above the crown, and the mintmark “X” denotes the Amiens Mint.

Graded NGC AU58, this coin exhibits exceptional preservation with minimal signs of wear, retaining sharp details and luster. The overdate is clearly visible, adding to its numismatic interest. As the finest known example of this particular overdate from the Amiens Mint, it represents a significant rarity in the series of Louis d'Or coinage.
